Foley is a small town in Alabama, located about seventy miles south of Montgomery and one hundred miles north of Birmingham. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. Foley is the county seat for Marshall County. The first residents of Foley were Creekside Cherokees who established a village on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in 1827. A post office was established in 1829, and by 1840 Foley had a population of fifty-eight people. By 1860, there were 1,000 settlers living in Foley. Businesses included three sawmills, two grist mills, four horses and wagon shops, four tanneries, six stores and twelve residences. The town became an important transportation center due to its location near the then new railroad line between Montgomery andBirmingham. In 1870 it had thirteen businesses including four churches and one schoolhouse; five homes; twenty-six people lived in Foley; nine farms raised cotton; twenty-four men worked in manufacturing or agriculture; seven women worked as domestic help or got jobs to support their families. In 1900 Foley had thirty businesses with a total population of 2,500 people; fifteen homes; ninety-six people lived in Foley; eleven farms raised cotton; thirty-five men worked in manufacturing or agriculture while forty-nine women worked as domestic help or got jobs to support their families. In 1960 Fulton County was created from parts of Marshall and Jefferson counties when Mobile County was divided into those two counties along with Baldwin County so that all Alabamians would be included within Mobile County’s borders no matter what their residence location may be outside of that county limits
