Foley is a small town in the Alabama Hills of central Alabama. It is located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Tuscaloosa and 40 miles (64 kilometers) north ofBirmingham. The population was 1,090 at the 2010 census. Foley was founded in 1881 by Nicholas Foley and his brothers, John and Michael. The family operated a farm until 1886 when they moved to what is now Foley Village on Cove Creek. Nicholas Foley served as mayor of Foley from 1907-1911 and 1913-1915. In 1916 he purchased the village from its previous owner, Rufus Heston Jr., for $1,000 cash plus an acreage for a future school. The community had been developing slowly since it first became established, with only two stores and one hotel opening in 1925 and 1926 respectively. On December 3, 1931, the first post office opened in Foley with mail service provided by Wirtz Brothers livery stable owners Harry and Jesse Wirtz. By 1937 there were six businesses operating in Foley: three stores (the original store, the hardware store, and the feed store), one restaurant (the First National Bank), two banks (the First National Bank and the Peoples Savings Bank), four churches/synagogues (First Baptist Church; Methodist Episcopal Church; Jewish Congregation Beth El Lubavitch; Presbyterian Church), two schools (Pinecrest School District #2 - which operated from 1927 to 1935; Lakeview School District #1 - which opened in 1928), one physician(Dr James Cavanaugh) providing health care services for residents of town during World War II(*?), five farmers Markets that offered produce from local farms every day*, seven grain elevator operator*(*?),one plumber(*? - J F Howland*) serving all occupants of town except military personnel (*?, no business listings have been found*) In 1946 Pritchard's grocery store closed down after running out of food supplies due to World War II shortages (*?). Two years later Slagle's Hardware Store opened up near corner of current Business Street & Court Avenue after purchasing property across from Pritchard's original building *? *. In 1951 Slagle’s began selling microwave ovens (*?). Main Street was renamed Courthouse Avenue following a lawsuit against former name change proposer Verna Aiken *? *.
