Gunlights have been a part of the Foley community for over 100 years. They are first mentioned in 1885 when one Mr. Crouch patented a small, then-new type of lighted pistol that could be worn on the person's belt. The weapon was known as the "Crouch Gun". The first gun lights were built by local blacksmiths to help farmers and other rural residents during agricultural seasons. In 1936, Foley police officer J.D. Young purchased a pair of gun lights from a dealer in Oklahoma City. He used them to help enforce law and order in his town during the Red Scare era. In 1955, both state legislators and mayor Milt Asbury sponsored an ordinance recognizing gunlights as firearms and providing funding for their construction and purchase by citizens. The city quickly erected two sets of gunsights at two locations -one near the post office, another on US-31 near Foley High School - to promote public safety while zeitgeist changes were taking place throughout America. Although these early gunlights were not actually powered by electricity, they did use oil or kerosene lamps to light up their surroundings; this source of illumination is still used today on some older model gunsights made between 1954 and 1989 (most notably those manufactured by Sargent & Swinehart). Foley is a small town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Foley was founded by Welsh settlers in 1819 and incorporated as a city on February 14, 1907. It became an independent municipality on December 15, 1966. Foley is the county seat of Montgomery County. The history of Foley began with Welsh colonists who arrived in Alabama in 1819. They built three churches and some homes around what is now downtown Foley. The town name originated from their belief that the kingdom of Britain would one day disappear and be replaced by a new land called "Foley". The first post office was established in Foley on October 9, 1830. In 1836, the first courthouse was built and served until 1915 when it was destroyed by fire. A new courthouse was erected between 1915-1920 and again served from 2009-2013 before being destroyed by fire once again in 2016. In 1907, City status was granted to Foley due to its growing population and increasing business opportunities within the community beyond agriculture or retailing services such as grocery stores or tire stores. The city prospered thanks to its rich cultural heritage including two notable museums: the Bellefontaine Museum of Art which is located inside City Hall (formerly known as "Old Courthouse") and the Gadsden Arsenal National Military Park which contains significant artifacts associated with both Confederate General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 12 1865and World War II Japanese prisoner internees held at Fort Pickett near Mobile Bay during Operation Crossroads On December 15th 1966, following a referendum approved by voters statewide,[1] City Council passed an ordinance abolishing annexations of municipalities other than those authorized under state statute; this effectively ended annexation attempts by other communities within Montgomery County violating municipal law since they were not specifically exempted from annexation pursuant to state statute (but did not have to apply for it). This resolution also declared that all actions taken prior to December 15th1966 pertaining to cities or towns outside of Montgomery County were void without exception save for necessary judicial review pursuant to state statutory requirements.[2][3] As such any property annexation occurring after that date remains subject to legal challenge should future annexation efforts occur outside of written regulations set forth herein
