Foley is a small town in Alabama, United States. It is located on the border of Cullman and Limestone counties. The community was founded in 1871 by General James B. Foley, who served as a general in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Foley is named after him. The population of Foley was 1,479 at the 2000 census. Foley has a history dating back to 1871, when General James B. Foley founded the community of Foley on his land east of Limestone County line. At that time, it was known as "the Upper Mobile Settlement." In 1881, General James B. Foley's granddaughter married John Aiken Clarke of Cullman County and they renamed their settlement "Foley." According to oral history from early settlers, General James B. Foley had purchased what became present-day limestone county from Creek Indians for $1 million dollars in 1836 and decided to make this area his homebase for operations during the hostilities against Northern forces that were taking place throughout Alabama at that time. The first post office in Foley opened in 1880 under the name "New Hope," reflecting its location near New Hope church on Limestone River north of today's town square (then part of ruralLimestone County). The first settler hereabouts was Wm Hancey with his family late one winter night about 1840 or early spring; he came down river with hoes and spades to clear an opening into which he could build himself a cabin without assistance from others - all alone! There were no roads then nor are there now; only footpaths leading through woods to scattered residences until well into this century! In those days most people did their trade principally within themselves or with others they knew personally; few ventured out much beyond their immediate vicinity... Fearing Indian attack several families took up residence along main St., just south/west of present day postoffice building - formed what became known as 'Hanceyville'. By early summer [1850], store lots had been acquired along Ferry Rd., just northeast of present day Post Office Square (now part Of RuralLimestoneCounty), providing essential transportation & living quarters for growing population ('The Depot'). 2 stores later opened: Mrs Beavers Store (& post office) adjacent N Black Horse Dr.; Geo & Eliza Schmidt’s store across US HWY 4 @ junction Ravenna Rd (later SSE corner Gadsden Rd); store opened Apr 1886 by J C Pope & Son[?] On Oct 2nd 1886 J C Pope died suddenly leaving wife Annie Marilla sole proprietor….One year later P G Pope also passed away leaving wife Annie Marilla sole proprietor….In October 1889 Mrs Etta Slaughter opens her grocery on NW corner High Street opposite Pategon House…In 1903 Mrs Slaughter sold her interest to Mr George Fenton who operated it until 1922 when it closed due to high water levels caused by Hurricane Hazel…..In 1927 Dr James Fenton purchased it from Mrs Slaughter….Today beautiful old fashioned hardware store #2 deeded Dec 2002 by Gen William L Moseley Sr.(Died 1998)
