Foley is a small town in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Foley was platted in 1885 and named after General John C. Foley, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as commander of Union forces during the American Civil War. The town began to grow rapidly after the opening of the interstate highway system in 1967. In 2002, Foley was made an official city by then- Mayor Donny Hathaway. It has since seen several waves of growth as people from nearby Mobile moved into Foley to work or retire. Foley is located at (32°48'17" N 87°56'24" W). According to the USGS: "In 2000, Foley had a total area of , all land." As of 2010, it had an total population of 1,541 residents (excluding its two villages). The median income for a household in 2007 was $38,250; the median income for a family was $51,500. The unemployment rate for 2008 was 7%. According to 1880 Census records and local legend,[1] there were five families living on Main Street when it became known as "Foley". By 1910 there were twenty-six families living on Main Street and twelve businesses.[2] The first post office opened at Foley on October 15th 1909 with Fenton Waddell as Postmaster.[3] After serving one year he resigned because he could not get mail delivered from his house due to construction work going on nearby which disrupted communication between townsfolk[4]. A new post office called "Foley" opened December 9th 1911 under Jno Henson with Lulu Kappas serving as First Clerk until her death on October 5th 1912[5]. On January 2nd 1913 Interurban Railway Company bought most of what remained of PEMCO Railway Company including Route 66 running through town establishing interurban transportation within town limits[6]. One day following interurban service being established citizens petitioned Mayor Hathaway asking him if they may open their own store serving general merchandise only instead of relying upon PEMCO services[7]. On May 8th 1915 Mayor Hathaway granted this request and renamed it "Municipal Store".[8] That same year saw birth rates increase due to World War I hostilities which caused many locals to enlist in military service; these men would return homeinafter years with little or no time for family life[9][10][11]: majority returning home by train whereupon they would take delivery right up front door
