Foley is a town in Monroe County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. In 1907, Wm. C. Grimes bought out Hines' Mill and expanded production of cottonseed oil to include soybeans and other crops. By 1920, Foley had a post office (the first in Alabama) and three churches: Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian; Grimes also built a schoolhouse and four stores around which many families gathered for church services during the day or night. In 1955-1956, local resident Jody Latham erected a ten-foottall aluminum cross at the site of current Fourth Street Baptist Church so that motorists could see while driving down FM 431 that they were passing through what was once called "Foley's Crossroads". The cross still stands today as one of the most enduring symbols associated with Foleytown!
