Foley, Alabama is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. Foley is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. It is named for General Joseph Ewell Foley, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as Governor of Alabama. Foley was founded by John Denton in 1836. A post office call was first established in 1837, but it did not open until 1840. In 1841, the town became a county seat under the name "Huntsville". After being removed from that role in1848, Foley again became an independent city under its own government. It remained so until 1959 when it merged with Huntsville to form the current metropolitan area. The community lying east of downtown on Upson Street between Old Barker Road and Victorian Avenue was platted in 1845 by James Hargrave Underwood as a near-by settlement for his slaves working on his plantation north of present day Foley Road and Virginia Avenue (now Worth Boulevard). The name "Foley" originated with General Joseph Ewell Foley who fought during the American Civil War and later served as Governor of Alabama from 1865 to 1870; he abandoned his army unit at Appomattox Court House after Confederate forces were routed there two days before President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. He returned home to pursue a career in politics and began living permanently in nearby Mobile where he died four years later at age 82 years old
