In 1917 white settlers began arriving in what is now Foley and started development of their farms around what are now White Sands and Vestavia Hills high schools; they also built a few homes around then In 1930 white citizens petitioned for incorporation as a village but no action occurred until 1943 when an act by the state legislature granted township status to all newly created villages without intervening with existing townships In 1951 voters approved annexation by Vestavia Hills Township which boundary has remain unchanged since then In 1969 an act by the state legislature designated White Sands Boulevard as central road running through Foley giving it its present name On October 1st 1984 tornado struck parts of east Alabama leaving much damage including downed trees along with extensive power outages throughout most of rural northeast Alabama

Foley was founded on December 12, 1867 by John A. Foley and James Fenton as a farming community located on the Mobile River near what is now Hoover Dam. The name of the town derived from General Andrew Jackson's Creek Bridge over which it crossed. In 1893, Foley became one of the original counties in Marshall County when it was created from parts of Springdale and Uniontownships. In 1905, it incorporated as a city under the name of "Foley". The city's nickname came about because its water supply came from nearby Lake Pontchartrain; residents were known to pluralize words like "foley" to avoid confusion with other towns' names that included similar sounding initial letters (e.g., Huntsville). Foley experienced significant growth during World War II due to military production and housing projects around the area such as Poston Park and Biloxi Bayou Preserve. In 1945, following World War II's end, Foley became an official post-war settlement within Marshall County when all but two of its unincorporated communities were annexed into the county seat of Decatur (the exception being Poston Park). However, almost all township boundaries have since been revised or eliminated entirely in favor of more metropolitan areas within Marshall County; as a result, Foley remains an exclusively rural community today. The city has undergone various changes throughout its history including annexations by other municipalities (most notably Montgomery in 1965), mergers with other cities (most notably Birmingham in 1997), and designation as a satellite city for Birmingham pursuant to zoning laws enacted prior to that designation - though much effort continues to be made by City Council members towards achieving annexation into Birmingham proper through legislation or negotiations alone rather than via annexation proposals submitted directly to officials within Birmingham City Hall . A recent development has been increasing firewood sales along US 31/Birmingham Pike outside of downtown; this event has become known locally as "Foley Firefest."
