A study published in Lancet Neurology found that when patients were given shocks after surgery they required greater levels of care than those who received placebo injections (Joshi S et al "Shock following major surgery: A systematic review") While some people feel that electric shocks may provide relief from symptoms such as muscle aches and fatigue associated with various medical procedures, scientific studies do not support this claim generally speaking (Goudreau F et al "Electric Shock Treatment - A Review"), particularly when compared with traditional medical treatments such as analgesics or massage therapy which often provide more satisfactory results without causing any long-term side effects [Farrell JA et al "A Randomized Controlled Trial Of Electroconvulsive Therapy For Neural Pain"] However there have been rare cases where an electric shock treatment has resulted in death purportedly from excitement produced during seizure activity although this cannot be confirmed scientifically [Brady MF et al "Electroconvulsive Therapy Associated With Death From Excessive Sensation"] It should also be noted that electroshock therapy can produce serious Side Effects including loss of sensation below the waist called hypotension which can result from significantcurrent flow through adjoining veins at high pressures [Liu JH et al "Injuries Associated With Electroconvulsive Therapy"] These Side Effects usually occur within minutes after exposure but can last up to several hours depending on how intense the current was applied and how severe these Side Effects were considered
