In 1887, United States astronomer George Catlin began his observing campaign in Florence, Alabama. He was looking for the "Great Comet," which he believed would be visible in November that year. Although no such comet appeared during Catlin'scampaign, a large and bright starburst phenomenon called the Great American Eclipse of 1892 was seen in central Alabama. The following year, Catlin again used his telescope to observe this event, and discovered a new comet! This discovery made him one of America's most prominent astronomers and has been cited as an inspiration for many subsequent amateur astronomers.

Florence, Alabama is the largest city in the state of Alabama and it is also the most populous city in the Birmingham metropolitan area. The population of Florence was 204,873 as of 2016. It is located on the Tuskegee River just south of Birmingham. The history of Florence goes back to 1824 when Adam King set up a tannery here to process animal skins. In 1828, Colonel John Coker established a post office in this town which served as an important link between Montgomery and Jefferson County. This post office was discontinued in 1939. In 1850, two brothers named John and James Saugus started a sawmill in Florence that processed logs from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They went bankrupt within twelve months, but their successors continued operations until 1965 when they sold their business to Myron Mixon Sr., who founded Mixon Paper Mills Incorporated (MPI). MPI produced whiteboard paper for local businesses before moving into electronic paper production in 1984. In 1957, Alonzo Ball made his first purchase here with $5 million dollars donated by President Dwight D Eisenhower to build what would become University Park High School. The school opened its doors for students on September 1, 1958 with only 110 students! At that time, United States Steel Corporation had its plant north of town and many employees moved into University Park from outside the city limits while other companies left because of competition from steel producers east of Mobile Bayou. In 1969-1970 US Steel closed its plant making University Park completely dependent upon student enrollment at Renaissance Technical College which soon closed as well due to budget cuts by then Governor George Wallace’s administration; however, Renaissance reopened after new management took over and has operated continuously since then without any major changes except for minor renovation projects.) The decline and loss of industry throughout much of downtown Florence led to large numbers of people moving out during the late 1990s and 2000s as factories were closed or relocated elsewhere in Staffordshire County or other parts ofAlabama due to economic restructuring brought about by globalization pressures associated with free trade agreements such as NAFTA/CETA/. However, small businesses have slowly begun recovering thanks largely to private donations totaling more than $200 million since 2000 alone! The resurgence (albeit slow)of downtown Florence can be traced back largely to two initiatives: First, Downtown Florentine Development Authority was formed in 2006 To support small businesses through marketing & promotional efforts; secondly Mayor Joe Hogsett created The Business Improvement District (BID) around City Hall which provides support services including technical assistance & marketing coordination for participating businesses.) Today’s downtown Florence offers a mix thereof traditional brick buildings dating back centuries along Main Street lined with fashionable boutiques/retail stores next door while newer high-end condos are being built along Telegraph Road portions providing easy access Interstate 65 where visitors can find restaurants etc.; foot traffic has increased significantly recently especially given recent construction projects nearby like One Alabama Plaza just across I-65 from downtown via I-20 exit 191A bringing jobs directly into town while also expanding transportation options available at an adjacent shopping center reaching beyond Downtown Limits)

The first scopes were made by a man named Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. The modern day telescope was invented by a man named Johannes Kepler in 1610.
Florence is a city in the Alabama Delta region of the United States. The population was 19,813 at the 2010 census. Florence is one of the smallest cities in Alabama and has a population density of only 1,500 people per square mile (460/km²). It is also one of the most rural cities in Alabama. The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Florence in 1821. Captain James A. Cook discovered land that would become Florence on November 12, 1823 while sailing through Mobile Bay on his way to survey Cuba. Cook named the area after Giovanni da Verrazzano, captain of his flagship "Nova Erice". Early residents were livestock farmers and their families supplemented their income by trading goods with other parts of America and Europe. In 1829, Governor John Crenshaw ordered Surveyor General James Wirt to map out a town site for what would eventually become Florence. The original plat was filed with the government on December 3, 1830 and became effectiveJanuary 1, 1831 under terms set by Act No 11 of 1830 which created Floridas Territory as part of Jackson County, Alabama A large influx of white men from Georgia during Reconstruction led to increased business opportunities for local farmers and entrepreneurs who developed new transportation methods including steamboats and railroads which made it easier for merchants to reach downtown Florence from various outlying areas The post office was established at present day First Baptist Church Building on Spring Street on October 15, 1865 by J.W Fenton In 1886 an oil well was drilled near Florences downtown core followed by major development when two hotels were built: The Soo Line Hotel (now known as Renaissance) located at 620 Elm Street; and The Atlanta Hotel (now known as Courtyard Marriott), located at 501 Main Street . These establishments served as key economic engines driving growth throughout much ofthe late 19th century In 1898-99 both hotels burned down leaving only a single story frame building standing - this structure still stands today
Florence, Alabama was founded by the Thomas family in 1819. The first settlers arrived in what is now Florence on a slave ship from Georgia. The town was named for the goddess of the night, who inspired their ancestor to migrate from central Alabama to this area. Florence became an important cotton center after being discovered by white men in the early 1800s.
