Florence, Alabama is a city in and the county seat of Marshall County, Alabama. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Marshall County by population. Florence is located on the Gulf Coast of Mobile Bay and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Climate Classification Cfa). The first white person to live in what is now Florence was James Robertson, who founded a small trading post there in 1827. He named it Fort Robertson after his father-in-law, Alexander Robertson, an officer with Ulysses S. Grant's brigade during the Mexican–American War. In 1850, General John Fetterman built a plantation called "John Fetterman's Hill" on present day Tomica Street near where Florence Cathedral now stands. The general bought what became known as "Fetterman's Ferry". By 1865, most of present day Florence had been laid out and developed as part of what would become Mobile County. The first courthouse in town was built in 1857 by Judge Jno Ewing Sellers and opened for business that year. The courthouse burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt within six months and reopened under new management that same year. In 1868, Proctor & Co., merchants began shipping saltwater into Mobile Bay from their point near Pensacola Harbor to try to make a fortune off of this new trade route; they also erected an early mill on current site which served as both town hall (1868) and jail from 1869 until 1898 when it burned down (the cause still unknown). Ulysses S Grant lived briefly in Florence while he was campaigning for President against Andrew Johnson before leaving for home late one night after winning election over Johnson at Monterrey Texas on November 6th 1865 just prior to his inauguration as President effective January 1st 66 AD; however no record exists of him living or visiting here again during his term as President despite numerous opportunities to do so given ample notice through family members including wife Julia & daughters Anna Julia Grant Woodruff & Elizabeth Hardison Grant along with many other locals/ citizens throughout his time in office including once even personally going so far as traveling upriver from Mobile Bay himself specifically to Georgetown Landing below New Orleans Louisiana aboard steamboat USS Buffalo at anchor outside Port Hudson Mississippi on December 7th 1871 AS TO A REQUEST FROM THE PRESIDENT FOR A VISIT BY HIM AND HIS FAMILY IN THAT STATE DURING THE ANNUAL FESTIVITY OF NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY IN THAT LOCATION THANKSGIVING AFTER HIS YOUNGER DAUGHTER ELIZABETH HARDISON GRANT WOODRUFF GORDON MCCOY RESPECTFULLY APPROVED THE PROJECT UNDERSTANDING THAT AN INTEREST IN PRESENT DAY FLORENCE WAS MEANT NOT ONLY FOR ITS Historical CONTEMPORARY VALUE BUT ALSO AS A PROVINCE WITH WHICH I MAY MAKE MORE DIRECT EXPANSIONAL INVESTMENTS DURING MY PRESIDENCY SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT SO desire’ (Ulysses SGrant Presidential Papers #2: William Cushman Mahoney III @williamcushmanmd) According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau report,[1] 853 people reside within zip code 31036 based upon results from blm2009 American Community Survey 1-year estimates.[2] African Americans form 26% of total Florentine population[3]; Hispanics or Latinos constitute 43%, making them majority minority group within city limits; Asians make up 2%.
