In 1827, General William Henry Harrison built a small fort near Florence to protect travelers coming down river on their way to Mobile Bay from pirates operating along that route. This fort remained unoccupied until 1840 when Brigadier General James Wilkinson burned it while besieging Mobile Bay because he believed that it could be used as a base of operations for attacking Confederate positions inside Mobile Bay should hostilities break out between America and Spain following its acquisition of Texas in 1845." In 1857–58 United States Senator James Kenedy (D-Mobile) visited Florence on business trips behalf of then-Senator Zachary Taylor (R-Oakland) during the Kansas–Nebraska Act debates preceding Kansas' admission into the Union as a Free State under Lincoln's presidency; Kenedy later became president pro tempore of the United States Senate under Johnson). At this time much attention was focused upon disputes surrounding slavery within states newly admitted into the Union – debate around these issues would continue throughout Reconstruction Era efforts to resolve them through legislation eventually leading to African American suffrage within both political parties following passage of Reconstruction Amendments granting voting rights to all citizens regardless of race across America via popular vote.) The first mayor was James Fenton who served from 1907 to 1912; then Hiram Pugh served from 1912 to 1916; after which time Homer Easley served for six years until he were succeeded by Edwin Laddsbury who resigned on May 15, 1932 due to health reasons In 1933, when Marshall County was created from parts of Lowndes County, Florence became part of that new county and remain so until 1959 when it reverted back to Lowndes County status
