They named their new settlement after the city of Florence, Italy. The Allens had no children and decided to move to Florence so they could continue running their farmstead. In 1830, thanks to the efforts of General James K. Polk and Congressman J.D.McLaws, the town was renamed Florence proper in honor of both men. The original courthouse located onnow known as State Street still stands today and is used for court proceedings and other events related to the city of Florence itself.
