Florence is a small town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and home to the Florence-Montgomery Municipal Airport. As of the 2010 census, its population was 21,811. The community was named for Italian actress and philanthropist Rossellini, who died in Florence in 1922. The first settler in what would become Florence was John Fenton from England. He built a cabin on a hill overlooking what is now downtown Florence in 1827. A post office called "Fenton" was established in 1828 and remained operational until it closed in 1865. In 1829, James Robertson founded the First Baptist Church here. The Athens Company merchants erected a schoolhouse on Main Street near today's courthouse in 1830 and named it "New Beginnings." A subscription drive led by ladies of the town gave $2,000 to build a new church which opened its doors on December 30, 1830. In 1834 280 residents voted to form a borough with themselves as trustees; they elected James Robertson as their first mayor After local elections were held on November 3rd of that year an act of Congress created Montgomery County out of Floyd County following Creek Campaigns between Andrew Jackson and John Corder (the General) over land rights issues around Mobile Bayou - this being one reason why most of present day Florence has been built along Ulysses S Grant Parkway or I-565 corridor - prominent citizens including Senator John McCain Sr., then Congressman from Arizona moved their businesses or homes into what would be then rural Montgomery County when they realized there might be more opportunities for them here given political instability aftermath Andrew Jackson's victory campaign across Mobile Bayou less than two years later . In 1840 about 350 residents banded together to purchase 1/4 acre (0.24 ha) lot at intersection of 5th Avenue South & Main Street from Jno W Klinefeldt – father-in-law of future Ulysses S Grant – for $5 per acre (1/10 ha). They renamed it "Grant Oaks" after President Polk who had recently come to power after Reconstruction ended; he donated additional land nearby for schools and other civic purposes . By 1850 only 16 families still lived there but by 1870 there were 680 people living there mostly farmers with five stores: Gadsden Woolen Millinery store opened by Mrs Eileen Grayson; Haughton Seed Store run by Isaac Haughton; Flour Mills store operated by Nellie Matson; Post Office started off as "Grant Oaks" but changed name several times before becoming known as "Frentzen Avenue". From 1865 until 1907 street names were strictly alphabetical order with no current abbreviation used except "Avenue", which became obsolete soon thereafter because all streets have since been renamable with an initial letter followed by another letter like Pkwy or Ave . In 1859, the town of Florence was founded by General James H. Wilson and his wife, Julia C. Wilson. The town originally consisted of only a few hundred residents, but it grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Alabama River and its ability to ship goods exported from Tennessee to the Gulf Coast via the river. In 1874, Florence became an incorporated city and in 1912 it became a state capital city.
