Florence, Alabama is a town located in Mobile County, Alabama on the Gulf of Mexico. It was founded by General John C. Morgan in 1819 and named for the Italian city of Florence. The population was 10,853 at the 2010 census. The first courthouse in Florence was built in 1828 and also served as a jail during the Wilkinson years. In 1835, General James Wilkinson set up headquarters here and this is where he met with his Creek Indian allies to negotiate peace treaties. One such treaty led to the Creek War of1836-1837. During this time, Florence became an important military post because it was near Mobile Bay and its strategic location made it an important center for trade and commerce. The town also prospered because of its phosphate production which made it one of the most significant towns around during this time period During Reconstruction following Civil War, Florence developed into a major African American community with many businesses being opened by former slaves who had been freed from slavery or purchased by whites after their emancipation. With Reconstruction having ended, attitudes about race began to change throughout Mobile County which caused some businesses to close or be abandoned within a few years of their opening According to historian Wendell Berryman, “a new generation emerged eager for economic opportunities but still sensitive about how they were perceived” This group included many black women who started small businesses while working alongside white women in local grocery stores and other commercial establishments They were among those instrumental in helping to create what later became known as the Black Renaissance inAlabama In 1915, Florence residents organized themselves into two churches – First Baptist Church (founded 1865) and Second Baptist Church (founded 1912). These churches helped develop social programs that encouraged education among African Americans as well as developing networking opportunities between -=African American businesspeople=-and white people
Florence was founded in 1821 by General Andrew Jackson as a military post on the Alabama River. After the American Civil War, Fort Gaines was established in Florence and continued to serve as a military post until 1898. In that year, the U.S. Volunteers forced Mexico out of the Southwest and Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became president of Mexico. As a result of this event, many Mexicans migrated to Florence and began businesses there such as mining and agriculture.
