Florence, Alabama is a small town located in the Huntsville metropolitan area. The population was 5,513 at the 2010 census. Florence began as a steamboat landing on the Mobile River near present-day Florence on December 20, 1819. It was named for the Florentine city of Florence in Italy and became an agricultural center with cotton plantations and sheep ranches. By 1890, however, Florence had become a manufacturing center with production of automobiles, radios and other electrical equipment. The city's economy lost its momentum during World War II but has regained some stability since then. The history of Florence begins with Isaac Stevens who founded it in 1800 as a steamboat landing on the Mobile River near present-day Florence Augustus Culp (1801-1884), Jr.. In 1820 he purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land including what is now downtown Florence from John Clifton (1795-1867). He built his home there called "The Cedars". For many years this was one of important mercantile centers in central Alabama because it could bring goods upriver to market by boat load. A post office was established at "The Cedars" on January 1, 1830; it remained open until 1907 when it merged into the Huntsville post office system. In 1853 JB Rankin closed down his sawmill at "The Cedars" after only five years in business because of low output due to strikes by locals against federal grants that were providing assistance to farmers in need. Rankin moved his operations downstream to new mills built along the Muscle Shoals River which he named Rankin Mills after himself and his father Isaac Stevens Sr.. When local resident James Folsom opened a grocery store at Noonday Road and Old Stage Road about 1900 he quickly became known as one of the most successful entrepreneurs in town because he offered high quality groceries at competitive prices without selling products below cost heterosexual competitors did elsewhere in Central Alabama at that time In 1922 Mayor Folsom appointed Clyde Tuggle City Manager responsible for all municipal affairs including planning and zoning; under Tuggle's direction development accelerated rapidly downtown resulting in more than 50% increase in assessed value over six years from 1926 through 1933 inclusive! Downtown Florence experienced rapid growth following World War II due to stimulus programs administered by President Franklin D. Roosevelt which created jobs throughout Central Alabama including those created by demolition of old buildings such as The Cedars mill complex beginning late 1945 which totally destroyed much downtown fabric thereby making way for modern skyscrapers developments immediately adjacent to riverfront park originally proposed but never implemented east side shopping plaza planned forsite but scrapped prior to groundbreaking also abandoned plans for large mixed use building occupying entire riverfront block original site plan included extensive parking garage facilities but never build
