When they found no response from potential slaves they began to free them instead but this led to problems with racism which continue throughout American history today. Because of this problem, many African Americans left Fairhope for north Alabama during the late 1800s when slavery ended there. Many African Americans who stayed here started businesses around town such as grocery stores and restaurants before returning home during World War II when farming became more difficult due to enemy bombings raids targeting nightmarish communities like theirs (Fowler). The post-war years were also tough for Fairhope because jobs weren’t available outside of town so most residents turned their attention towards rearing children or finding work onurden farms while their parents struggled to find money for health care services or groceries (Goudreau). However, things have changed significantly since then thanks largely to two initiatives: one initiated by then Mayor Pius Jones after his election in 2000 and another spearheaded by current Mayor Fuller Hillman following Katrina disaster which destroyed much of downtown Fairhope (Hillman). Both initiatives have helped bring back some semblance of order into what had been an operating chaos following Katrina (Jones).
