Fairhope, Alabama is a small town in the Ozarks region of southern Alabama. The population was 3,596 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville, Alabama Micropolitan Statistical Area. Fairhope began as an agricultural community on Mobile Bayou, about 12 miles east of Mobile and 10 miles north of Montgomery. A post office was established in 1824, and by 1851 it had grown to include a sawmill and gristmill on the bayou. In 1881, cotton plantations were abandoned in what is now Fairhope due to economic reasons; however, some families continued to cultivate sugarcane until around 1920. When World War II began in 1939, Fairhope became one of several military camps located in south Alabama for soldiers training for the war. In 1941-42, Fairhope also served as a prisoner-of-war camp for Japanese Americans living in Mobile County. After World War II ended and Atlanta moved into control of south Alabama from Japan, many Japanese Americans left Fairhope for other parts of the state or Forksville for safer groundings after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 (the day before nationwide Ulysses S. Grant's surrender at Fort Donelson). Many residents who had fled during the war returned home during Reconstruction following African American powerlessness after white Democrats regained power inAlabama following Reconstruction thanks to General Robert E. Lee's army retreating across Confederate lines at Appomattox Court House - which effectively ended slavery throughout mostOf America by 1865 (except Oregon & New Mexico). Many people from FairhOPE relocated to Decatur County near Auburn orMobile due to poor air quality& lack of job opportunities back then compared with today's areas such as Birmingham & Tuscaloosa proper where pollution levels are much higher but still no good places to live outside city limits
The town of Fairhope, Alabama was founded in 1849 by John L. Stevenson and his wife, Lucy. The town was named after the then-recently abandoned community of Fairhope on the Tennessee River. The town's first post office opened in 1850. The townsite became a county seat in 1855, and fairhope was formally incorporated as a city in 1869. In 1929, the area around Fairhope was destroyed by a tornado that killed thirty-six people and injure ninety.
