It is located on Mobile Bay, approximately 30 miles west of Montgomery and 25 miles east of Huntsville. The Fairhope area has been inhabited for more than 3,000 years. In 1795, Captain John Smith discovered what is now Lowndes County while exploring the Gulf Coast region for Spain. He named it after General James Fairbanks, who had served as the Commander-in-Chief of British forces in North America during the War of 1812. In 1819, lowndes county was organized from part ofMobile County and moved to its present location on Mobile Bayou near Fairhope Creek. The first courthouse was built here in 1821. As a result of cotton gin production throughout most of Alabama during the antebellum period, many African Americans were employed in fields around Birmingham and other industrial centers in central Alabama during this time period. Many black families relocated to Fairhope due to these opportunities; however, some remained until after Reconstruction when they were re-established as white citizens by law or by choice. During World War II much activity took place at Naval Air Station Cecil Field which stood just north of town on US Highway 98W between Macon and Biloxi counties . This airfield played an important role in Allied strategic bombing campaigns against Nazi Germany as well as serving as homeport for numerous Navy aircraft carriers including Enterprise (CVN 64), Lexington (CVN 75), Yorktown (CVL 44) and Hornet (HAR 59). In 1942–1945 about two thousand Japanese Canadian troops were interned here before being released under Operation "Submarine Force" when hostilities ended without their surrendering After World War II there was heavy development within Lowndes County centered around Pensacola Ammunition Plant , Inc., founded by Jock Mahoney Sr., one hundred acres southeast of town off I-10E Speedway Boulevard .Mahoney's company manufactured artillery shells and grenade launchers for sale all over Southeast Asia through his agency – Hapco Sales Corporation . By 1974 Hapco Sales Corporation had become United States Arms Company Incorporated with a sales force numbering three thousand employees worldwide selling arms to nations such as Cambodia , El Salvador , Viet Nam etcetera
In 1819, the area that is now Fairhope was part of what is now Tuscaloosa County. The town was founded by a group of farmers who arrived in Alabama from Georgia. At first, the town consisted of only a few homes and a small store. However, over time, Fairhope grew into an important community with a large population. In 1839, the people of Fairhope voted to become part of the Confederacy and remained loyal to their country during the Civil War. After the war ended, many Fairhope residents returned home and resumed their lives as usual. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1920.
