Fairhope is a small town in Alabama, located on the Mobile River. The population was 5,751 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fairhope County. The town began as a cabin settlement by white traders in 1819. It became a small community when Methodists and Baptists settled there in the 1830s. In 1881, Fairhope became the county seat after it was chosen from among several towns in western Mobile County. The courthouse and jail were completed in 1895 and are still used today. In 1978, Fairhope experienced a severe tornado outbreak that destroyed most of the downtown including many businesses and homes. A new downtown has been built since then and includes several blocks of government buildings as well as several commercial areas. Fairhope is known for its annual cotton crop festival which takes place in late October or early November each year. The festival features all kinds of food and drink, music, attractions for children and adults alike,and games for all ages.

The station’s initial purpose was limited only to agriculturally based research; however, it quickly became evident that Fairhope would be an ideal location for such a facility given its natural resources and wide geographical diversity. On July 1st, 1849, the AEES relocated from Mobile Bayou into what is now Fairhope Township on Racine Creek near present-day Birmingham. The new location allowed for more efficient agricultural experiments due to its close proximity to major city streets and markets. Additionally, this new location offered better access to transportation due to its secluded surroundings within miles of both Birmingham and Huntsville proper. The town of Fairhope was founded in 1825 by a group of farmers who were looking for a new place to settle. The town was named after theFairhope River, which flows through it. In 1830, the town had just five residents and was built on the site of what is now Fairhope Mall. The first store in Fairhope opened its doors in 1831. In 1835, the town received its first post office. In 1865, Fairhope became known as the capital of Alabama due to its importance as a port and center for cotton production. In 1870, FairhOPE saw its first fire when some clothiers set afire an old millstone used to power an engine in the square. In 1930, FairhOPE became part of Montgomery County and saw continued growth until 2000 when it merged with other towns within Montgomery County including Banbury and Cullman to form Tuscaloosa County.
