Fairhope is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,619 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what would become Fairhope were Frenchmen who came to Mobile in 1702 and named it "New France." The English built Fort St John on Mobile Bay in 1705 as a base from which they could blockade Spanish claims on Pensacola Island. In 1712, King George I of Great Britain granted land to James Robertson and others for the manufacture of saltpeter and other goods for his warships. By 1800, Fairhope had a population of 100 people and was an important salt producer on the Gulf Coast. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson invaded Alabama with Bragg's Division under Major General Nat TurnerSupporting Jackson's effort to overthrow Mexico's rule over Texas) during the Mexican–American War. On October 9th, 1813 near Fairhope Claytown (now known as Midway), Jackson's army destroyed a Mexican garrison after days of combat that resulted in the death of more than 60 Mexicans and 6 Americans including two generals: Andrew Pickens and Don Carlos de la Cueva y Mendoza On November 11th President James K. Polk ordered General Zachary Taylor to march on Santa Rosa de Aragón without waiting for orders from Polk himself because he felt Taylor was weaker than Polk thought he was Taylor reached Santa Rosa de Aragón on December 3rd but before he could take possession, Mexican forces ambushed him south of here resulting in his withdrawal back towards Taos Canyon where he met up with elements of Adobe Walls commanded by Captain Samuel Houston Afraid that Taylor might cross into Mexico proper undetected given his weakened state Polk sent Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter to meet up with Taylor north of here while Commodore John Denny sailed into Taos Canyon with ships full of troops intending to surround orangutan Ford if necessary

On December 3, 1871, the Alabama Legislature passed a bill to create Fairhope as a town in Montgomery County. The new town was named after General James H. Fairbanks, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.
