The town of Fairhope, Alabama was founded in 1866 by the merger of two small towns, Fairhope and Springdale. The first store in the town was built on First Street. In 1870, a post office was established at Fairhope and in 1875, a school was constructed. In 1901, a train depot was built and in 1935, a brick church was erected. In 1941, Fairhope became an independent municipality and within two years it had a population of 10,000 people. By 1945, the population had increased to 20,000 people and within five years it had reached 30,000 people. The city hall building which served as the municipal center forFairhOPE until its demolition in 1970 is now preserved as part of the Town Museum collection. In 1952-1953, Fairhope participated in the Talladega County fairs which were held at nearby Tuscaloosa. During these fairs several thousand residents attended various exhibits including breadmaking demonstrations by local bakers and car races benefiting local charities
The community of Fairhope was founded in 1892 by a group of farmers who left Mobile, Alabama for the new city of Birmingham. The name "Fairhope" comes from an Indian word meaning "good place to live." The first post office in Fairhope was established in 1894. The town began to grow rapidly after it was chosen as the site of the new Birmingham-Tuscaloosa Railroad station. In 1924, Fairhope became the county seat of Hardin County.
