Fairfield is a town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 6,782 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Tensaw– Fairfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Fairy Hill" comes from the nearby hill called Fairy Hill which was reputed to be haunted by fairies. The first settlement in what would become Fairfield was made on November 1, 1814 when three men and one woman set out from Decatur on horseback for Huntsville with intentions of finding land to purchase. They traveled until they reached a fork in the road and then rode back home, arriving at nightfall. On July 12, 1819, John Fenton purchased two hundred acres (twenty-six hectares) of land east of present-day Fairfield from James Giddings for $500. On October 3rd, 1830, Andrew Lowry erected a log cabin on what is now known as Fairy Hill which he named after his wife's family name fairy: Fairy Hill Cabin (now Old Fairfield Store). A post office called Fairy Hill was established in 1836 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1840 Alice Hightower moved to Fairfeldt from Huntsville with her husband Otho Hightower and their five children; four girls and one boy went direct to Mobile while Alice stayed behind with her parents. Her father became ill and she took him north to Tuscaloosa where he died on December 26th 1850 at age seventy-four years old – making Alice the only daughter born to her parents after they separated during their teenage years.) In 1857 Isaac Browning organized a group of farmers who bought 640 acres ( twenty-four hectares ) northeast of present day Fairfield from Andrew Lowry for $2 per acre ($60 total). The population of Fairfield was 12,827 at the 2010 census. The history of Fairfield can be traced back to 1819 when English settlers arrived in what is nowFairfield County, Alabama. They established a trading post called Fort Smith and began to build homes around it. By 1830, the settlers had erected a new courthouse and began to establish their own economy with businesses such as blacksmiths, wagonmakers, farmers and teachers providing services to the community. In 1901, Fairfield became an incorporated city after winning an election against two other cities that were vying for the position. In recent years,Fairfield has seen a number of changes as it has become more diverse both politically and socially due to its location withinAlabama's growing Hispanic population. As well,the city has worked to improve communication infrastructure including streetscapes and public transportation which have helped make living here easier for everyone involved.
The first white settlers in Fairfield, Alabama were David and Nancy Borden, who arrived in 1818. The Bordens were the first white family to live in the area. In 1829, the Bordens organized a church in Fairfield and named it after their home town of Hartford, Connecticut. The church was built on a location that is now known as Burr Ridge Drive. In 1835, John Fenton bought land in Fairfield and began to build homes. By 1840, Fenton had built over 100 homes in Fairfield Township. In 1860, a school was established in Fairfield Township and named after Mr. James Coddington of Birmingham, England. The school was operated by Mrs. Anna Woodbury from 1860-1865. From 1865-1867, the school was operated by Mr. Wm Hines from Birmingham while his wife ran it until her death in 1870. In 1870-1871, the school was operated by Miss Lucy Hines until she moved to Mobile and started her own school there 2 years later (in 1872). In 1880-1881, Mrs. Sarah Jorgensen started teaching at the new Union School which stood on what is now southbound US 31 near junction 10A when she became principal for Bluffton Female Colored School District #2 (laterMobile County Schools). She taught there until her death in 1902; also during this time period one additional building complex - Block 11 - was erected on what is now eastbound US 31 just before milepost 9½ within Muskegon Heights subdivision of Mobile County close to where State Road 271 intersects with I-565/US 31 today) From 1902-1905 Mrs Alice Hunt taught at Union School under instruction from Dr Ethel Mclntyre (who would become Superintendent of Schools for Mobile County schools starting with year 1905 onward). At this point Union School became known as "Alabama High School" prior to becoming MUSKEGON HIGH SCHOOL effective date thereof...Mrs Alice Hunt continued teaching until her retirement effective date May 15th 1935.... Post Office opened dated July 1st 1907 located adjacent to current day building number 6 within MUSKEGON HEIGHTS SUBDIVISION OF mobile county
