There are also several small farms located within Fairfield limits; most notably "Eli Lilly & Co."'s main campus located just east of town proper on Old US 65 across from Lowndes County Agricultural Airport (now Renaissance Park). Eli Lilly still has their headquarters there to this day!

In 1821, a group of men from Fairfield, Alabama founded a town in what is now Fairfield County. The town was named after the English village ofFairfield in Northamptonshire. In 1824, the town had a population of 50 settlers and was incorporated as a municipality. The first post office was established in Fairfield in 1827. The town continued to grow and by 1860 it had a population of 1,500 residents. By 1870, the population had increased to 5,000 residents and by 1880 it reached 10,000 residents. In 1886, the townsite was annexed into Montgomery County and Fairfield became an unincorporated community once again. By 1910, the population had grown to 20,000 people and by 1920 it reached 30,000 people. The early days of Fairfield were times of great growth and progress for its citizens- both during its brief history as an unincorporated community and more importantly after being annexed into Montgomery County as part of its larger growth.
The town of Fairfield was founded in 1827 and named for Colonel John Fairfield, a United States Army officer who served in the Mexican-American War. The community grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, with many newbuildings being erected on the bluff overlooking the Alabama River. By 1850, Fairfield had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1859, Fairfield became a seat of government for Fort Gainesborough County. However, by 1865, Fort Gainesborough had been replaced by Huntsville as the county seat and most of Fairfield fell within Huntsville's jurisdiction. In 1870,Fairfield voters approved a measure to annex all of Hardin County to form a new district. The annexation created an influx of Mechanicsburg-area settlers into what had been farmland near Fort Gainesborough. This prompted another name change – this time to Huntsville Townships (later renamed Uniontown). The town's growth continued throughout the 1870s and 1880s as businesses were built along Main Street and other nearby streets. At one point, Huntsville Townships contained more than two thousand residents; however, by 1890 it had only around one hundred residents remaining. During World War II, Fairfield played an important role in supporting military efforts in both Europe and Japan; local businesses donated goods and services to support troops stationed there. After the war ended in 1945, many post-war civilian jobs left town as factories closed down or moved away from developed areas due to high competition from elsewhere in Alabama. Market days would continue until about 1950 when most stores closed their doors for good because of technological advances which made goods unavailable at low prices anymore through mail order or internet sales sites like Amazon or Ebay
