In 1836, when Mobile became an independent country under the rule of James Kintyre King and his son John King (the father's brother),Fairfield residents voted to joinMobile as its city limits stretched outward to include all future developments along River Etowah westward to Baldwin City which would become known as Birmingham later that year. When Mobile was re- incorporation into Alabama in 1839, Fairfield remained within its city limits but lost much importance due to its remote location and lack of reliable transportation options outside Birmingham for most residents.
