Fairfield is a small town in Baldwin County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Vista–Pensacola, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fairfield is located on State Route 24 about 25 miles northwest of Mobile and about 20 miles northeast of Pensacola. The first white person to come to Fairfield was John Wilkinson in 1818. He founded a plantation called Wilkinson's Purchase which he named after himself and his brother-in-law, George Wilkinson. There were novillages or plantations in Baldwin County when it was organized as a county in 1819. The first courthouse was built in 1824 and seat of government moved from Wilkinson's Purchase to Fairfield in 1830. In 1830Fairfield had a population of seventeen whites and one black man named John Williams who worked for farmer John Foust on the homestead known as "Creek View". A post office called Fairfield began operation on October 10, 1830, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 6, 1865. In 1840 there were only six residents living within the limits of present day Fairfield; four men (John Wilkinson, James Gutherie, David Greene), two women (Nancy Greenleaf and Martha Ewing), and one child (Richard Greenleaf). By 1850 only three residents lived within the limits: two men (George Williamson II and James Gutherie) and one woman (Martha Ewing). Most growth during this time occurred outside of present dayFairield due to constant transportation challenges caused by Indian troubles along with Seminole Wars raids into adjacent parts of Baldwin County that disrupted agricultural production throughout much of central Alabama During Reconstruction following the American Civil War most African Americans either fled to Confederate states or returned home while most whites emigrated to larger northern cities such as New York City or Boston where they found jobs opportunities available during Reconstruction period unlike south where many blacks remained tenant farmers or clerical workers

In 1906, Fairfield became an incorporated city and has since grown to be one of Alabama's most popular tourist destinations. The early history of Fairfield is shrouded in mystery, but there are several clues that suggest its founding may have been related to moves made by settlers from neighboring Mobile County towards Montgomery for jobs and access to land. One such move occurred when Colonel Wilkinson purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of present-dayFairfield from John Epps for $2 per acre. This purchase indicates that at some point Prior to 1819,Fairfield may have been part of Mobile County - another indication that its early residents may have come from other parts of Alabama as well. Another hint at its early history comes from reports which suggest that before he founded Fairfield, Wilkinson served as justice of the peace in nearby Tuscaloosa County for nine years prior to moving his family there in 1818. As with many historical events involving people from outside Montgomery or Mobile County, these details remain murky and unprovable though they do add a little more context to what we know about Fairfield's foundation. During the late 1800s, progress was being made towards urbanization throughout much of America; this included movements towards developing centres such as Birmingham and Nashville - both located approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of where Fairfield now stands. However, due to economic reasons various sections ofAlabama continuedto remain rural until around World War II when farming became increasingly difficult due to increased competition from new industrial sources like automotive manufacturing plants and meatpacking factories across the state line in Tennessee . This transition saw many farmers abandon their homes in favor of becoming tenant farmers working plots ranging anywhere from 1/4 mile (.50 kilometer) up to 100 miles (160 kilometers). Though living conditions improved somewhat during this time period thanks largely to government assistance programs like crop subsidies and housing developments geared specifically towards agricultural workers, it is still generally thought that large tracts remaining rural until recently played a significant role in maintaining poverty levels within rural communities during this era - particularly those near Birmingham . While census data does not support this claim outright - certainly there are pockets throughout Alabama where poverty rates remain high despite better economic conditions overall - it provides an interesting perspective on how social stability can often be maintained even while technological advancements make life easier for everyone else
