The first gunsmith in Fairfield was Samuel Sligh, who worked with Colt pistols until 1854. In 1877, a store and post office were built on what is now Northwest Second Street. It was here that the first holsters were made. By 1907, there were three holster shops in Fairfield – one run by Gifford Macy and two by Wm. Hickey. In 1911, Sheriff Harry Aiken appointed J.C. Wiggins as the first sheriff of Fairfield County based on his reputation for being a fine shot and excellent holster maker. The Gunsmoke Holster Company began business in 1912 as a small store located at 106 West Main Street in downtown Fairfieldville (now part of Mobile). Tony Gibson opened the company with six employees including himself and manufactured all types of handguns including revolvers and shotguns using both traditional leather construction techniques and modern injection-molded methods pioneered by Gibson’s companymates Edward “Ted” Smith (1911-2002) and Earle Crouse (1910-2006). Fairfield is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,638 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1859 and named for Fairfield Township, Ohio. The first school in Fairfield opened in 1859. In 1865, Fairfield became a post office and within one year had a store and three homes. By 1870, there were six homes and eleven businesses in Fairfield with a population of just under 100 people. By 1880, the population had increased to over 150 people with thirteen businesses. In 1907, voters passed an ordinance establishing two separate schools for black students: one for white children who could not attend the all-white primary School District No. 2 or high school; and another for African Americans who could not attend any other school in Jefferson County due to segregation laws enforced by the state government at that time. This legislation marked the beginning of fair housing opportunities for black residents of Fairfield as well as many other black towns throughout Alabama during this time period

It was founded in 1867 and named for Colonel George Fairfield of Connecticut. The first settlers in what is now Fairfield were three men from Massachusetts: Peter Gregg, Samuel Gridley and John Smith. They surveyed and laid out the town on November 25, 1867. The original plat included four blocks square with a two-story house on each corner lot. A post office was established at Fairfield on January 7, 1870, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 15, 1911. In 1899, a Baptist church was built by Reverend C.E. Henson and dedicated to the memory of Drs John Mason (1834-1902), Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) and James Brickyard (1788-1877). At that time there were only Methodist Episcopal churches in Escambia County so this service provided an important link between the community and neighboring Pensacola. In 1907 a new school building was erected near Center Street which served as the township's primary educational facility until 1951 when it became known as "Pensacola High School" after then Superintendent of Schools Denny Epps' successor during that period William Broughton Jr.'s tenure there as well as other high schools located within the municipal boundaries throughout Escambia County including South Walton High School (now Walton Academy) just south of Pensacola proper; Magnolia Middle School west of Mobile; Eastside Junior High School north of Mobile; Gainesville High School east of Mobile; Indian Wells Senior High School west of Panama City Beach; Heritage High School east of Panama City Beach - all under one superintendent's jurisdiction which increased from twelve to twenty-one schools with corresponding staff members over time leading to increased efficiency while also accommodating larger budgets resulting in more professionalization thereby enhancing public education services across county lines throughoutEscambia County government had always been centrally controlled through its elected officials with department heads reporting directly to their respective ministerial deputies who report orally to county executive Rawlings whose authority derived from Chapter 3A Statute 9Ala No 492 et seq Ala Sec 511 et seq It should be noted that these numbers do not include students attending private institutions such as Gulf Coast State University or Auburn University which are located within Escambia County limits but rather those living within municipal boundaries represented by counties such as Bradford or Asbury Park without any formal educational affiliation
