Gun swivels, also known as " gun-locks" or "gun-trotting", are devices used to rotate the barrels of handguns in order to adjust their aim. After that time, most handguns produced for civilian use include swivel mechanisms. Fairfield is a city in Butler County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fairfield was founded in 1836 and named after Fairfield Township, Pennsylvania. The first post office in Fairfield was established on July 3, 1836. The first store in town was opened by Solomon Myers on December 12 of that year. A millinery business started up and continued for several years before being taken over by Mrs. John Hogg on October 1, 1850. The town had its first schoolhouse in 1856 and its first Methodist Church on November 10 of that year. A cotton gin began operations in 1861 and produced a high quality product until it was destroyed by fire on February 9, 1865; however, the town did not lose its economic base as output from other businesses continued to grow until 1965 when the plant closed down due to competition from mechanized production methods using air-driven machinery instead of water power sources. In 1899 Fairfield became one of fourteen Towns organized within Butler County through an act of Congress known as "An Act To Promote Agriculture And Rural Development". This act provided for a consolidated government with all local governments within Butler county sharing common services and programs without duplication or independence among them - including education, public health care (including streetcars), social welfare (including housing developments), zoning regulations and more than $5 million worth of state assistance which would be used to promote agricultural development and rural redevelopment throughout the county

He patented the idea for his swiveling gun which allowed the shooter to rotate the barrel to aim at any angle without having to remove their arm from the weapon. The rotating action was accomplished by means of a large gearwheel hidden beneath the barrel that rotated as the gun was fired.
