Fairfield was a small town in Alabama before the American Civil War. It was located in Lowndes County, on the eastern border of Mobile County. The post office at Fairfield was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it were discontinued on July 1, 1907. The town was laid out by J.M. Goodnight and Elisha Hines as part of a land grant to John Witherspoon from the British Crown. The first settler named Fairfield is unknown, but it is believed that he may have been named for Fair Lawn, New Jersey which had a similar grant given to him by the British government. During the antebellum period, Fairfield functioned as a small village with just under 100 residents. However, following the outbreak of war in 1861, activity increased rapidly due to both Confederate sympathies and an influx of new settlers from Alabama who had taken up arms against Union forces. By early 1862, there were over 150 people living in Fairfield with about 25 businesses operating successfully within its boundaries. On May 12th 1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg called for all men of military age to assemble at Greenville for muster-out; this Notice served as summons to any man who desired service within Confederate ranks or wanted his property confiscated if he did not join them immediately! This call generated significant interest among local citizens who saw their opportunity to gain some sorely needed goods and services while also displaying their loyalty to Confederate causes. Consequently, many men voluntarily assembled at Greenville that day including several members of the Post Office staff who decided to stay behind after realizing they would not be required to serve if they did not join up immediately! In response to this mobilization effort spearheaded by Brigadier General James Longstreet (later Field Marshal), President Jefferson Davis issued Order No. 11 which ordered all males aged 21 or older without any tangible military ability “to desert through open doors” or face arrest and prosecution! This order led directly into battle when on September 17th 1862 approximately 60% of allMale Citizens age 21 or older registered with Federal troops either serving with Southern armies or awaiting transport northward on troop transports! Many men took this opportunity wait out battle instead opting for safe havens such as Mobile Bay where they could await word from home concerning their loved ones still fighting beneath enemy lines…or turning themselves over unconditionally once hostilities ceased! In total more than 2200 individuals registered with Federal troops during October 1862 alone!! A large number of these individuals did so because they knew they would not be able to return home should their unit be engaged in combat – many surrendered prematurely due simply To lack Of information!!! After monthslong deliberations between Union generals Braxton Bragg and Robert Ewell Lincoln decided upon an attack against Richmond via North Carolina’s Catawba River valley – only one week after Order No 11 went into effect!!! Unfortunately for Confederate forces little progress was made until November 6th when Union cavalry discovered abandoned fortifications near Durhamtown!!!!! A frontal assault ensued resulting in terrible losses for both sides….and fairfields male population numbered now close TO two thousand!!!!
The town of Fairfield was founded in 1818 by John Fairfield and his family. The town is located in the northwest corner of Alabama, on the Clearwater River. It is a small farming community with a population of around 400 people. In 1847, the town petitioned for statehood and was granted permission to do so in 1848. The town became a part of the Alabama Territory after it was created from parts of Mississippi and Louisiana. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Fairfield sided with the Confederacy and was destroyed by Union troops.
