Gun protection history in Fairfield, Alabama began with the founding of the town in 1821. At that time, guns were not common and there was no organized militia to protect citizens. The first gun protection measures that were put into place were restrictions on who could own guns and how many they could have. In 1868, a shotgun ordinance was passed which limited shotguns to those owning two or more rifles. This ordinance also made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to purchase a shotgun. In 1906, a Second Amendment amendment was ratified which granted Americans the right to bear arms for self-defense purposes. Throughout its history, Fairfield has been known as a stronghold of gun owners and Second Amendment rights. There have been several incidents where firearms have been used in defense of the community, most notably in 1968 when three people were shot and killed after protesting an anti-gun bill at town hall.

Fairfield is a small town in the U.S. state of Alabama. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile-Tensaw- Fairfield micropolitan area. The name "Fairfield" is thought to be derived from two Indian words: "warfare," and "illed." Located in Mobile County, Alabama, it dates back to 1824 when a group of settlers named Fairfield laid out acreage on what is now Fairview Avenue in Mobile. In 1865, Elijah Parish platted what became Fairfield and named it after his grandfather, James Fenton Fairfield Sr., who had come toMobile County in 1827 as an interpreter for Spain's colonial government. The first post office opened in this town on March 25, 1892. The first settler in what is today Fairfield was John Whitehead who arrived there in 1829 with his family and land grant from Governor Robert Rainsford. He built a cabin near present day US Highway 98 and called it Whitehead's Ferry Landing.
