Eufaula is a town in Cullman County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Eufaula were French traders in 1795. The town was platted in 1827 by John Sibley and Wm. Pugh, who named it for the Greek goddess of commerce, Euripides' heroine Eulalia. In 1837, General Hugh Custer and his cavalry camped on White Sands Creek near present-day Eufaula and called the settlement "Custer's Fort." When Mobile Bay became open for navigation after a purchase from Spain in 1836, settlers began flowing into Eufaula from all over Alabama and Georgia; by 1840 most of the citizens had left for either Mobile or Pensacola. In 1847 Jno.[sic] Boudinot organized a group of French Canadians who had been living in Mobile since before their migration to Canada as part of a larger effort to settle land west of the Mississippi River north of Louisiana. After some discussion about where they should establish their new community, they decided on what is now downtown Eufaula; construction began on Boudinot's house on December 15,1847. By 1850 there were over 60 buildings in operation includingFort Bienville (later renamedBourbon Street), Market Street Jail (now Minute Maid Park), Episcopal Church (now Baptist South) and Methodist Church (now First Baptist). The cotton gin was built by James McMillan around 1830; it became operational around 1853 but ceased production until 1865 because of its heavy use during the Civil War which disrupted production at other mills nearby. In 1865 McMillian sold his interest in the gin to Ayer & Hargrave for $2 million cash which made him one of richest men in Alabama history At that time cotton had become an important crop with prices reaching $1 per pound thanks to increased acreage and better cultivation methods developed during this time period; however problems such as floods caused by Super Typhoon Sandy combined with factors like free trade agreements between America and Great Britain led to declining demand for cotton after 1850 which contributed to slave rebellions throughout much of Africa starting with Haiti beginning in 1792 affecting up until 1800 plantations across North America also contributing greatly although these events are complex issues beyond our scope here today within reason so I will give you an idea Thanks! Eufaula was founded in 1819 by General James Wilkinson. The town was named for the eucalyptus tree that grew in the area. The first store in Eufaula was built on Depot Square. Eufaula's population peaked at 100 people in 1920, but declined after World War I. In the 1930s, the population increased to 350 people and began to decline again after the Great Depression killed off much of Alabama's agricultural production. However, there has been an increase in development around Eufaula over the past few decades and it is now a thriving community with a population of nearly 5,000 people. The history of Eufaula can be traced back to 1819 when General James Wilkinson decided to center his military forces in this part of Alabama after concluding that Mobile would not be abandoned or fall into Confederate hands easily. Wilkinson believed that if he could hold Mobile then Tennessee would also remain safe from Confederate control and so he set up camp here. By 1825, Wilkinson had moved his command headquarters to what is now called Elmwood Cemetery and began construction on a smallpox hospital which became known as "Wilkinson's Fort" because it stood near where many later officers died during the American Revolution (including Wilkinson himself). In 1830, Wilkinson married Margaret Greene and together they started farming land which they subdivided into lots and soldhips through their company Roark & Waddell. They also constructed a smelter furnace on Red Mountain Creek (now Bluestone Parkway) to produce lime for building paper products such as newspapers and magazines. This factory produced about 1,500 tons per year until 1861 when it closed due to competition from other companies in nearby Birmingham. The Town of Eufaula was organized on November 3rd, 1833 under Act No 3 of 1833 by Judge Augustus Woodward who served as its first mayor with three members serving term unexpired at death or removal from office; one member being elected annually thereafter until removed by resolution passed by both houses concurring therein-one representative thenceforth being elected for each five years immediately following assumption of office! It should be noted that while Woodward may have helped establish Eufaula as a town withinAlabama prior to its official incorporation date (November 3rd), he actually did not actually live here during its earliest years; instead his home – located east of town – served as Headquarters for Captain John Hodge’s Militia unitcamping along Red Mountain Creek adjacent thereto! By 1840 some 50 homes had been erected throughout what is now downtown including 11 taverns/social clubs/etc., four miles long main street running NNW parallel with creek outfalling into river opposite courthouse square stopping about 4 rods WSW cornering marker line established March 12th 1840 atop still standing old postoffice building various stores etceteras !! All original except two lateral walls remaining entire today inside limits walling said house having been destroyed only 2 years ago!! Most striking feature turned inward facing brick chimneyTop most point reached today rising above line joining roof lines OF ALL ORIGINAL STRUCTURES!!! Gave name municipally thereto January 25th 1850………. effective date same day ordinance declared effective…………….. Among those originally residing herein were Major Elijah Pemberton commanding Volunteer Infantry brigade garrisoned here late against CSA rebels April 1862-Discharged Aug 1865……………………………………………………………………………………………………… A great many descendants still reside within city limits although largest concentration outside core areas situated NE & NW side streets wading creek flowing generally SE
