Eufaula was a small town in Alabama until the early 1800s. It first developed on the Tennessee River, and later became a center for cotton production. The town’s post office operated from 1819 to 1828. In 1865, Eufaula was burned by Union troops during the American Civil War. In 1870, it was renamed Alma after General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the war. After Custer’s death, Alma reverted back to its original name of Eufaula. In 1907, Eufaula became a city and has grown since then. Today, it is one of the most diverse cities in Alabama with over 120 different cultures represented within its walls. The history of Eufaula began with two families who lived near what is now downtownEufaula in 1817-1818. The first settler named James Pemberton arrived in 1819 and built his home on what is now Jones Street between Second Street and Third Street. He farmed land surrounding his home for years before he decided to move into town full time in 1830 when he opened his store on State Avenue between Second and Third Streets (later renamed State Avenue Railway Station). In 1865, Union troops burned down part of Eufaula while fighting against Confederate forces; this event left scars that remain today across Main Street from where the fire originated (now known as Independence Avenue). Eufaula quickly grew due to its location on the banks of the Tennessee River which made it an important transportation hub for cotton farmers throughout central Alabama. By 1840, there were over 100 businesses located in downtownEufaula%. By 1860, Alma had reverted back to its original name after General George Armstrong Custer's death during the American Civil War; this change occurred because Alma had been previously mentioned as an option for corruption complaints filed against General Sherman's forces during their advance through central Alabama during that conflict (Alma at that time served as Sherman's headquarters).
