Enterprise is a city in Etowah County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,831 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Etowah County and the largest city in the county. The name "Enterprise" originated from a Cherokee word meaning "place where wild rice grows." The first permanent settler in Enterprise was John Denton in 1818. Denton named his town after his plantation on Choctawhatchee Lake near Mobile, Alabama. A post office called Enterprise was established in 1825, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1830, George Washington Hardin founded an agricultural society here known as the "Alabama Colonization Society". He helped to bring over 1,500 African Americans to this area during the 1830s and 1840s as part of his efforts to promote white settlement west of Mobile Bayou. In 1865, General James Hatton's brigade of Union troops marched into Etowah County following their victory at Perryville during the Battle of Perryville Campaign; they were camped around what is now downtown Enterprise while supplies were unloaded ashore at Fort Payne on Choctawhatchee Lake. On July 10 local men scalped two Confederate prisoners who had been captured during that battle - one by Private William Coggins (of Company K) and one by Captain Prentice (of Company E). This event became known as "The Scalping Party", which led to public outcry against General Hatton's actions. Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Vann Woodward ordered all horses out of town for fear they would be mutilated if brought within gunshot distance of any Confederate prisoners or dead soldiers; this orderrobotically transported all Horses from Fort Payne without incident until 1863 when cavalry action reopened ferry service between fortifications and town proper necessitated their removal again In 1870 enterprise had a population of 870 people when it changed hands from Tuscaloosa County government to Etowah County government under new leadership including future Ulysses S Grant who later served as Mayor Etowah County Courthouse old & new photos

In 1812, Enterprise became the capital of Alabama. Soon after, it developed into a large city with a thriving economy. By 1865, Enterprise had become an important industrial center in Alabama and boasted of being the "largest cotton-producing town in America."
