Enterprise is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. The name comes from the Battle of Enterprise on October 10, 1812. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa–Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Enterprise was James Gadsden who arrived in 1819. He built a cabin on the present site of Enterprise Elementary School and named it Gadsdenville after his home state of Georgia. In 1832, Captain John Smith founded what would be known as Mobile Bay Company Post #1 on the bayou that now becomes Fort Towson which served as a military post for years until moved to its current location in 1840. That same year, Captain Smith's son-in-lawWilliam Troup established Troup's Store at what is now Second Street and Highway 231 east of downtown Enterprise. Troup's store served as an important link between Mobile Bay Company Post #1 and local farmers and traders until 1870 when it burned down due to arson by local residents angry over high prices for goods brought into town by traders from Mobile Bay Company Post #1 In 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Enterprise was attacked by Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg while it was still under Union control; this attack led to the burning of most buildings within town including Gadsdenville Chapel which remains standing today as a historical landmark . Aftermath of this attack included large numbers of casualties among both Union and Confederate troops occupying town at that time Following Union withdrawal from Alabama during Reconstruction (1867-1913), enterprise continued to struggle financially with little hope for improvement until 1917 when JN White purchased 160 acres along Huntsville Road north of downtown from A&P Benhams heirs for $3,000 This purchase enabled White to develop what became known as White Hall which later became one of Alabama's most important business districts .
