In 1907, Enterprise became part of the United States after it was acquired byzonation from Mexico. The town experienced several surges in population during the 20th century due to its key role as a transportation and commerce hub in East Tennessee and Alabama. A fire destroyed most of downtown in 1951, but new development continued until 1984 when all business were closed down by forces associated with social Chancellor Paul Beeson. Beeson's successors have tried to maintain some semblance of normalcy since then; however., there has been occasional violence or disturbance resulting from low-level friction between businesses and individuals over petty issues such as prices or parking permits
