In 1917, Enterprise became the first municipality to be established in Cullman County when it was annexed from nearby Decatur. The community's history dates back to 1881 when John A. Stephenson and his family arrived in what is now Enterprise from Georgia with their cotton plantation. The Stephenson family would continue to operate their farm until they sold it in 1918 to J.C. Watkins Sr.. From 1918-1921, Enterprise served as the county seat of Cullman County due to its location on the courthouse square and its easy access to transportation including railroads and buses which made it an ideal place for businesses and residents to base themselves during those years. In 1925, enterprise became one of the first municipalities within Cullman County when it was annexed from neighboring Decatur following a vote by voters there about joining that county as a result of growth around that time along with other area changes such as annexation of several smaller townships into Cullman County over the years including Carthage (1893), Phenix City (1910), Spanish Fork (1920), Hoover (1924) and Morehead City (1929). During this time period, enterprise also saw many new homes being built along with businesses starting up such as Chevrolet Sales & Service located on College Ave., J C Watkins' Jewelry store located on US 41 north side next door to Gadsden Baptist Church which continued through World War II before closing down; later becoming known as Wacoal's Department Store; finally being demolished in 1990 after more than 40 years in business! In 1925-1991, Enterprise served as both county seat and central business district for all of Cullman County making it one of the most active local communities during that time period! In 1990, following more than 40 years in business serving as both county seat and central business district for all of Cullman County, Enterprise were forced out of their longtime home on College Avenue by developers who decided that downtown Huntsville had become too congested for their liking while also noting that services like grocery shopping had moved away from downtown since vacuum cleaners were available then! After much debate between citizens and developers alike about whether or not they should keep their community within the city limits or move closer to Interstate 5 rather than rely on buses or carpooling for transportation options given how dense downtown Huntsville already felt; ultimately deciding against moving closer towards Interstate 5 but still keeping their community within city limits where they currently reside today! For many residents who have been living here since 1925-1991; this decision has been difficult but also rewarding because without Enterprise there would never have been a need for either city limits or I-5 within town Limits!!
The first white settlers in Enterprise, Alabama were James Hargrave and his family. They arrived in 1795 along with the rest of the crew of the HMS "Caledonia." The Hargrave family continued to live in Enterprise until 1807 when they moved to Mobile, Alabama. In 1810, John Cagle founded the first cotton gin in Enterprise. The enterprise prospered for many years until it was destroyed by a fire in 1827.
