In the early 1800s, Enterprise was a small community in Alabama. Firearms were not as common as they are now and there was no need for them. However, there were people who loved to shoot and use firearms for fun. One such person was George Stephenson, who founded Stephenson Mines in 1824. Stephenson started manufacturing cannons and pistols in Enterprise and these firearms were used by the local populace for protection from Indians and other criminals. In 1829, he introduced the first firearm cartridge to America which became known as the " Stephensons' Rifle." The rifle helped Stephenson become one of America's most successful entrepreneurs. The gun industry in Enterprise thrived during this time and many famous people bought firearms from Stephenson. In 1851, he founded the National Arsenal Ammunition Company which manufactured artillery ammunition with his own resources. The late 1800s saw a slight change in firearm policy in Alabama when Governor John Crain outlawed handguns statewide effective January 1st, 1889 due to concerns about crime rates increase caused by newly invented firearms like rifles that could be fired without reloading. This law effectively ended pistol ownership withinAlabama until it was repealed in 1906 by then-Governor Folsom

In Enterprise, Alabama, there has been a long history of firearm wearing. Bullet holes can be found in the walls dating back to 1858 when a local blacksmith started selling pistols and shotguns. In 1865, the first African American was elected to the Enterprise city council. By 1870, there were over 100 black residents living in Enterprise. The townspeople voted to allow African Americans to own firearms for hunting and self-defense purposes. This landmark decision helped start the modern handgun culture in America.
Enterprise is a town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Enterprise" was given to a tract of land by trustees for the establishment of a school and courthouse in that community. The first post office in Enterprise was established on January 12, 1827. The town was platted on February 15, 1828 by John Ladd and James Ritchie as a part of Tuscaloosa County. A store and tavern were built soon after; also a Baptist church and Masonic Lodge were erected in 1830-31. In 1835-36, enterprise became an incorporated community with one vote per capita from its citizens who subscribed to an ordinance providing for local government within limits prescribed by state law. When Tuscaloosa County was organized into Jefferson County (1837), enterprise became part of that county; but it reverted back to Montgomery County when Jefferson became again unorganized (1849). A sawmill began operation on December 1, 1840, at what is now Enterprise’s downtown square; it continued until 1865 when production ceased because of financial problems brought about by the American Civil War. A cotton gin followed in 1850; but this mill also stopped operations due to financial difficulties during Reconstruction Era economics which prevailed throughout much of Alabama at that time . A blacksmith shop opened near the present day Walmart Supercenter following business development around 1990 downtown involving small businesses situated along Enterprise Boulevard eastside including Hardee's restaurant then known as "Empire".
