The Enterprise, Alabama is a city in Limestone County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1885 by John Ladd and named for his cotton plantation in neighboring Mobile County. In 1936 it was renamed for James Meredith, the black student who became the first African American to attend a white university in the United States. In 2006 Walmart announced plans to move its U2 music factory from Dublin, Ireland to Rogers Centre near Toronto before announcing plans for similar moves across Canada later that year including Edmonton and Montreal According to Forbes Magazine’s 2008 list of America’s “Most Diverse Cities” – “Enterprise has seen more than just growth: It has transformed itself into a global center for technology businesses…. With over 100 companies based here now (many of them tech giants), it has become one of Silicon Valley’s most important economic engines…. [It] has also become known as one of Atlanta’s most creative neighborhoods where young people are drawn downtown to work on innovative startups or pursue their dreams while living close enough to experience all that South Fulton has to offer… [This] makes sense given how mobile technology hubs have emerged around world capitals such as Beijing and Mumbai…..Since 2000 [Marvell] Properties LLC […]has leased over 350 acres (15 km) inside the boundaries of Enterprise proper……The company now employs 4200 people within 3 miles (5 km) radius surrounding our corporate campus." The City government operates through Mayor Grimes/First Lady Gayle Griggs/Councilman Jerry Dixon and Councilwoman Brenda Johnson-Dixon among others elected by residents at-large without term limits

As Birmingham grew wealthier and more racially segregated than Enterprise did, many African Americans moved into Enterprise from rural areas throughout centralAlabama. The final decline of enterprise began in the 1870s when most local businesses were either sold or destroyed during black risings against white rule throughout southern Alabama. However, some small businesses continued to be operated until about 1915 when disco music started taking over local radio stations andlocal business stopped making money

The area that now includes Enterprise was first populated by the Creek people, who were known for their fishing and hunting habits. In 1821, a group of Englishmen named John Cranch arrived in Mobile Bay and chartered the ship "Natchez" to transport goods from Mobile to New Orleans. They arrived too late for the Creek people to leave forts they had built on the peninsula that would become Enterprise. The English men named their new settlement Enterprise after one of their ships, but it wasn't until 1824 that a permanent town was established here. During its early years, Enterprise served as an important stop on the route between Mobile and Jackson. In addition to being an important trading center, enterprise also became home to a number of local businesses including a tannery and a flour mill. It wasn't until 1859 that steamboats began serving as transportation alternatives for locals and tourists alike. This led to increased business opportunities for both enterprises and made Enterprise an even more popular tourist destination. In 1865, during Reconstructionist times following the Civil War, Enterprise became part of newly organized Alabama Territory under President Abraham Lincoln's administration. At this time, Enterprise grew rapidly as businesses opened up throughout central Alabama due to cheaper labor rates available through freed slaves working in local farms and factories. By 1870, enterprise had become such an important economic force in central Alabama that it attracted attention from leading capitalists around the country as well as representatives from African American communities who desired equal access to enterprise resources within their own nations.
