Enterprise, Alabama is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,856 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The community was founded by early settlers in 1836 and named for George James Enterprise, an entrepreneur who had moved from Tennessee to Mobile shortly before that. The first post office in Enterprise was established in 1839. In 1847 the town had a population of only 10 people and lasted only one year. A new courthouse was built and the town became permanent when it became part of the larger city of Mobile on November 16, 1849. In 1865 Enterprise passed through a period of great turmoil with three major fires which destroyed most of its buildings; however, within two years all but two buildings were rebuilt and the town prospered again as an agricultural center with cotton plantations and other commercial endeavors until World War I when it lost its economic importance toMobile due to technological advances. After the war it reverted back to its pre-war status as an agricultural center until after World War II when automobiles came into general use and began moving large numbers of people away from agriculture in search of jobs outside their homes which caused many businesses to fail or move out while others increased their production while maintaining or even exceeding their original prices because they could no longer compete without customers who now lived elsewhere. In 1949 Enterprise merged with neighboring Centerbrook to form Mobile's second largest municipality by size (behind only Jackson). The townsfolk decided that having more than one municipality made more sense since both centers were growing rapidly but also because there would be less competition for services offered by both municipalities combined which would free up more resources for local development including arts and cultural programs, health care, libraries etc.. Today enterprise continues as a vibrant industrial/commercial center with several high-tech companies active as well as several small familyowned businesses providing employment opportunities for locals during these tough times

During this time, Enterprise had a population of around 300 people and was one of the most prosperous towns in Alabama. However, during the 1850s Enterprise began to decline because of changes in transportation and trade patterns. By 1860, only 50 people lived in Enterprise while more than 2,000 people lived in Montgomery. The town's economic fortunes changed again when railroads were built through Alabama in the late 19th century. This new transportation allowed businesses to grow larger and better connected to other parts of America; however, enterprise also lost some of its former importance due to this change. Today, there are only a few remaining businesses that still call Enterprise their home; however, it is an important historical memory for many residents who visit or live near the town.
In 1865, the Union army invaded Alabama and successfully defended the state from Confederate forces. The area that is now Enterprise was then a part of Mobile County. In 1871, the town of Enterprise was platted and named in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant's visit to the area in 1868. In 1903, the town of Enterprise was renamed Birmingham because it became an important city in Alabama during that time period. In 1907, Birmingham annexed portions of Mobile County and Enterprise became a part of that annexation.
