During World War I, Enterprise played an important role in supplying munitions to both sides in the conflict. After the war ended, enterprise grew rapidly as businesses expanded into new markets including trucking and manufacturing. The growth of these industries caused many residents to move out of Enterprise into surrounding towns such as Decatur, Muscle Shoals, Tuskegee, Birmingham and others throughout south central Alabama. Today, Enterprise remains an important community with strong ties to its past while growing quickly into a major center for industry and commerce in southcentral Alabama. Its economy depends heavily on agriculture which continues to be a significant contributor to local coffers; however recent trends suggest that this sector may be facing challenges that could impact future profits. The town was named for George Rogers Clark, who had led the cavalry expedition that destroyed Santa Fé in 1804. The town served as the capital of Alabama from 1819 through 1830 and again from 1832 until it moved to Montgomery in1835. In 1830, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which ordered all Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River to leave within two years or be driven into slavery. Enterprise played an important role in helping lead America's effort to remove most Native Americans from their homes. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Enterprise became known as Battle Creek due to several skirmishes fought there between Unionists and Confederate forces before and after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. During the war, many factories were built near Battle Creek including one owned by Andrew Carnegie which produced munitions for both sides
