Dothan, Alabama is a small town located in the Mobile County seat of Dothan. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census and 2,088 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1867 by Colonel James A. Robertson and named for General John C. Moore, who fought in the American Civil War on their side. Before Indian Removal in 1830, most of what is now Dothan was part of Creek Nation land that served as hunting grounds for both white and Cherokee Indians. In 1837-38, during Andrew Jackson's presidency, General Edmund Kirby Smith burned down a village near present-day Dothan to punish Creeks who were raiding white settlements in Mobile County territory. This event led to increased Indian activity around Dothan and encouraged settlers to move into this area from other parts of Alabama. In 1881-82, following a series of earthquakes which struck Mobile County, Many people moved to live around Montgomery because there seemed to be no chance that they would be affected by future quakes. When railroads arrived in Mobile County after1885, many businesses started moving out westward due to available jobs and new transportation options such as automobiles and air travel. By 1900 nearly all residents living within one mile (1 km) of downtown had left for greener pastures or because their businesses had relocated elsewhere (eighty percent did so by 1920). Dothan experienced its first tornado outbreak on November 3rd 1886 when an EF2 tornado touched down just outside the town limits killing three people and injuring twenty-four others including six children under the age of ten years old who were swept away into nearby trees while their parents desperately tried to save them with buckets filled with waterfilled sacks placed over their heads until help arrived). There have been more than sixty tornadoesogenic events reported annually within one mile (1 km) radius of downtown since 1900; however only two have resulted in fatalities – both occurred on April 14th 2003 when an EF3 tornado touched down just outside city limits damaging dozens homes but no casualties; this deadliesttornado ever made landfall east Tennessee before hitting GulfportAlabama The population growth associated with job opportunities has prompted developers to build high-rise condominiums overlooking downtown along several blocks between Pine Street/Jefferson Avenue South and 5th Street/Moses Lane North - some even reaching up into Woodward Park off Cedar Grove Boulevard - creating a skyline view unlike any seen elsewhere inside or outside Birmingham/Tuscaloosa metropolitan areas According to real estate firm CBRE’s 2006 forecasted market conditions report: "Despite slow economic growth rates nationally over recent years...the rate at which luxury condos are being built remains strong...This trend may continue given continued job growth throughout much if not all U S states." One result has been street closures adjoining Fifth Avenue during morning rush hours due sidewalks become jammed with residents coming back from work seeking views rather than taking public transportation
