The first target was located on State Street in downtown Dothan and was called the “Tower of Doom.” The tower was built as a warning to citizens about incoming gunfire. In 1912, the city council decided to build a new target range on South Main Street. The target range was designed by Colonel J.G. Armstrong and opened to the public in 1914. At that time, there were only 21 guns available for use at the range. In 1929, gun manufacturers began producing Target pistols which allowed shooters to hit large targets with ease. The present day target range is home to both National Rifle Association (NRA) members shooting center and general public alike, open every day except Saturday from 9am-5pm during rifle season and 9am-noon during pistol season; Mondays through Thursdays are closed for maintenance purposes only; and Sundays are open as usual except for muzzleloading fires which must take place in one of the three ranges located within city limits: Elmridge Range (northwest corner of Elmridge Boulevard/State Street), Midway Range (southwest corner of Midway Boulevard/State Street), or Purdy Field (east side of Purdy Drive/Alabama State Route 256). During rifle season, access is limited Friday morning until 3pm due to handgun registration requirements; Saturdays are unrestricted from 9am until noon; while weekdays remain open 8am-4pm., muzzleloading fires must take place in one of the three ranges located within city limits: Elmridge Range (northwest corner of Elmridge Boulevard/State Street), Midway Range (southwest corner of Midway Boulevard/State Street), or Purdy Field (east side of Purdy Drive/Alabama State Route 256).
