During World War II (1939-1945), military personnel stationed at Fort Benning sent food to construct dithane housing units; this helped spur economic development within the town during that time period According to last data available from 2000 census., there are over 4200 full or partial employed people living within city limits while less than 1000 people live outside those boundaries

Many people from Dothan attended Agricultural College (now Auburn University) where they learned how to plant and process cotton. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Confederate troops to burn down most of Mobile's cotton market after Union forces captured that city following a three-week siege. This destroyed many local businesses and contributed to Mobile's fall into Union hands two years later. However, due to wartime shortages of manpower and materials, Dothan did not see much destruction or impact from the war itself; however, it has been suggested that some downtown areas may have been looted as souvenirs for soldiers stationed throughout Mobile at that time

After he was elected president of the United States in 1828, Dothan became his political and military headquarters. In 1845, Dothan became one of Confederate States of America's capital cities after it seceded from Great Britain. By 1850, Dothan had reached its peak as a commercial center with an estimated population of 50,000. However, during World War II Dothan experienced significant growth as a munitions manufacturing center for American war efforts in Europe.
