Dothan is the county seat of Jefferson County and the largest city in that county by population. The name "Dothan" is an English word meaning "a town on a stream". The first settler in what is now Dothan was a Mr. John Hartsfield who arrived in 1821. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the Mobile River and its access to railroads. By 1830, Dothan had over 1,000 residents and it became the terminus of the Mobile & Ohio Railroad. In 1835, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Alabama and sacked much of Mobile during his campaign against Mexico City; this event is known as Battle of Mobile (1835). AfterMobile was sacked by Jackson's army, local citizens decided to rename their town after General Jackson because he had been so instrumental in saving their city from destruction. In 1847, Dothan was chartered as a borough withinJefferson County. On April 16th 1870 when Montgomery Beatty took office as Governor of Alabama he abrogated all municipal laws which made Birmingham more populous than Montgomery; this event is known as the 25th Amendment ofAlabama Constitution (1870). In 1907 Dothan lost its charter but regained it five years later when it became part of newly created Jefferson County which included all rural areas east of Interstate 20 excluding Birmingham On January 15-16th 1960 DOTHAN hosted one daylong international conference on racial integration called "The March for Racial Equality." This event helped laythe groundwork for civil rights movements throughout America during that decade
