Dothan became an independent municipality on December 1, 1907 when it merged with Marshall County to form a new county under the name of Marshall County Fairfield Township Municipality No. 2 (now Fairfield). In 1933, during the depths of the Great Depression, many businesses closed due to lack of customers or price hikes by local merchants inspired by President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs designed to help Americans overcome the economic slump caused by Hoovers' stock market crash in 1929/30.
