The city was founded as Fort Jackson on Mobile Bayou to house Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. On May 12, 1865, Confederate general Robert Ewell ordered all Confederate troops living in or within 3 miles (5 km) of Dothan to leave town and march south to Tallahassee. Over 5500 men were forced to leave their homes and families were destroyed as they left. The Battle of Dothan ended with Union forces retreating into Chattanooga over the next few days.
