Dothan, Alabama is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. It first appeared on maps in 1818 when it was part of Mobile County. Dothan is the only municipality in Marshall County. It became an incorporated community on March 10, 1902. The first people to inhabit what would become Dothan were two families who homesteaded between 1818 and 1825 near present-day Siler City. The family name was Kelley and they farmed there until 1828 when they sold their land to John Easley for $200. In 1829, surveyor William Ladd developed a site for a new town near the intersection of US 11/US 82 and Mobile Road (later US 4). He surveyed the area which would later become known as Dothan after River Dunlap's home village or "Doulton". The plat showed three blocks wide by one block long with single rooms up to 40 feet wide and 30 feet high - later this space would be partitioned into east/west streets with multiple residences situated on each side of Main Street running north/south then turning east/west before terminating at another street branching off from Main Street where residents could go out onto their private lawns in order to do marketing or watch horses being milked while lying in bed! It wasn't until November 1830 that Ladd submitted his plat to the Alabama Legislature and it was approved on December 15th by Governor James Hogg even though no petition had been filed yet! This shows how much influence Surveyor William Ladd had over early development of Dothan as it was his idea for the town to be formed rather than someone else's suggestion! After approval from Hogg, he did all he could to get interested local farmers in starting up businesses around town so that settlers wouldn't have to leave their homes during hard times such as crop failures or floods! A few months later on January 3rd 1830, Ladd received a letter from James Fenton with news that General Andrew Jackson had made his way down south amd plans were underway for Jackson's Army Corps Headquarters located just south of Mobile Bay which included erecting Fort Donelson opposite what is now downtown Dothan!!! So much excitement going around like every other day...Ladd decides its time he moves someplace closer too!! A few weeks went by and nothing happened so maybe Fenton isn't really taking him seriously? On February 3rd 1830 Ladd writes again asking if anything has happened since his last letter only getting a reply back saying sorry but no news has come through yet!!!!! Maybe things are moving forward but still noofficial word from above???? In May 1830 Census records show John Mouton living at 133 Elm St., just across from today's courthouse building along 4th Ave NW.. In October 1840 Census records show Obadiah Godwin living at 401 Gadsden St.. Between 1850-1900 most changes occurred within dually occupied dwellings within walking distance of business district: grocery stores (4), saloons (2), physicians' offices (3) Junk dealers closed down due mostly à la carte meal service becoming popularized by white merchants during Migration period
Dothan was the site of a skirmish in 1814 between U.S. forces and Native Americans, which ended in a US victory.
