During this time period, Decatur experienced several important milestones including becoming an official U.S. capital in 1861 following Mobile's secession from Alabama; hosting the first permanent school board meeting in Alabama; becoming an international center for cotton trade; being designated as the "second largest city" in Alabama bythe state legislature; and hosting the centennial celebration of Montgomery's incorporation into Alabama in 1907. Despite these successes, however, some challenges also facedDecatur during this time period such as persistent poverty and lack of access to healthcare services despite its high population density; violence against women; racial tension with African Americans.;and numerous crime incidents which contributed to social disharmony across race lines
