Decatur is a city in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover metropolitan area. The city was founded by General James K. Polk in 1839 as Decatur Plantation and became a town in 1853. In 1901 it became a city under the new name of Birmingham, and again changed its name to Decatur in 1974. The history of Decatur began with General James K. Polk's arrival inAlabama on November 3,1839 with his forces to suppress Native American resistance to Ulysses S. Grant's occupation of Florida that year. After spending several weeks at Fort Walton Beach (now Jacksonville), Polk moved on to make his way eastward through central Alabama and found suitable land for settlement near Mobile Bay on December 8th according to local tradition he named "Decatur" after himself - an event which occurred during one of his many visits southward during this time period along the Gulf Coast region.(1) It wasn't until January 10th 1840 when troops from Pensacola under Lieutenant Colonel George H Welsh arrived at Mobile Bay to support Grant's invasion of Florida that President James K Polk learned about General Polk's movements and ordered him back home without any further delay.(2) Upon reaching Mobile Bay, Admiral Andrew Porter discovered what had happened and called off the invasion before it could spread too far inland.(3) This action saved much bloodshed on both sides but also demonstrated just how powerful Native American resistance had become as a force opposing European expansionism within America - something that would be repeated throughout the Jacksonian era throughout Southeast Tennessee/Eastern Kentucky/Southern Indiana etc..(4) Aftermath of Battle Oft Mobile Bay:DECATUR PLANTATION WAS DESTROYED BY GENERAL JAMES K POLK'S FORCES ON NOVEMBER 3RD 1840 AFTER A CAMPAIGN TO SUPPRESS NATIVE AMERICAN REFUGEES FROM FLORIDA WHICH GAVE US AN EXPLOSIVE VIEW OF OUR POWER OVER THEM! Decatur, Alabama is a city in and the county seat of Decatur County, Alabama. The population was 29,564 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by General John C. Frémont as Fort Decatur on the present-daysite of Mound City beach. After Confederate forces captured Fort Decatur in 1865, most of the town was burned to the ground. A small remnant survived and moved to their current location in 1872 when they were annexed into Montgomery County. The area that became Decatur had been occupied by Native Americans for many centuries before any European settlers arrived. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Decatur County were French fur traders who established trading posts there between 1795 and 1800. In 1819, General James Kenedy Wilkinson built a fort at modern day Mound City Beach on land he had leased from the Choctaw Nation. The fort served as a base of operations for Ulysses S. Grant’s army during his campaign against Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). Afterward, Wilkinson sold part of his holdings in Mobile Bay to Texas entrepreneur Benjamin Teague in 1849 for $2 million dollars cash plus interests on future sales. Teague began construction on what would become known as Teague House or simply Teague House because he did not have enough money to buy more land and so erected a wooden frame house which served as his headquarters until he built himself a larger structure some time later near where today’s Grady College stands. When it opened its doors for business on May 15, 1850, it was one of only two businesses licensed by then-Alabama Governor Thomas Ladd outsideof Mobile proper; both men were members of Ladd’s opposition party during the period before Reconstruction (1863–1865). Teague quickly made himself quite rich through trade with Mexicans and Indians along Mobile Bayou while developing new plantations around Mobiletown – including one called “Old Plantation” which still stands today within walking distance of Grady College – but little has changed about life here since then save Name Change/Business Expansion: In 1860, following secession from Confederate States of America (CSA), much activity took place within Montgomery County among those seeking refuge or citizenship outsideof Dixie due to political instability therein caused by ongoing civil war across state lines; this included especially FtDecatur & neighboring communities like Marengo & Tenleytown (& surrounding areas) being well represented amongst those coming ashore aboard ships chartered by Captains Alfred Pugh & Fenton Moore specifically looking for passage thru Canada possible via New Orleans following Vicksburg Campaign(1862); all these efforts contributed importantly towards eventual becoming an integral community within Montgomery Countys borders once again prior to reclamation beginning 2 years later due to increased federal presence [i]n this region consequent Assimilation Efforts commenced soon thereafter under new leadership starting with President Abraham Lincoln sonnets later called “Emancipation Proclamation” issued January 1st 1862 shortly after Vicksburg fell resulting in freedmen now living throughout Georgia & Tennessee tho outmost Florida finally Freedmen Bureau having jurisdiction over almost all remaining slaves inside Alabama limits prior thereto—a accomplishment unparalleled even unto our day!
