Decatur is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 103,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of DeKalb County. The name "Decatur" is derived from the French word "découverte", meaning "discovery." The Decatur area was first inhabited by the Chickasaws, who were driven out in 1814 by settlers from Georgia. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson sent a military force to drive out the Creek Nation and their traditional leaders, including Chief Muscogee Joe (1792-1837). As part of this effort, General Jackson destroyed many of the Chickasaw villages and incarceration led to an increase in slave trade within Indian Territory. In 1825, Decatur became a town when its Post Office was established. At that time it had a population of about 100 people. A year later it grew to 125 when two stores opened and another three were built soon thereafter. By 1830 Decatur had 5 churches and 7 schools. In 1840 Decatur had 11 businesses with a population of over 150 people; by 1850 it had 15 businesses with a population of over 300 people ! In 1852 Decatur became one of six towns in Alabama for which slaves were allowed to vote beginning onJanuary 1st, 1861 . In 1865 Union General Robert Ewell captured Mobile after US Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay - resulting in much loss for Confederate forces including the capture or killing of thousands of men, women and children as they flee into Mobile Bay aboard ships sunken during that engagement - leaving behind an abandoned city filled with UNHCR tents pitched among piles of munitions left behind by retreating Confederate troops weeks earlier! In 1889–90 coalmining began operations northeast around what is now downtown Decatur as part as Marietta Coal Mines Company at what is now Fourth Street between Constitution Avenue North and Broadway Avenue North; production continued until 1923 when all mines closed due to strikes (see also: Mobile Strike). Decatur is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The town was established in 1847 by General James H. Carman and his brother-in-law, Colonel John Sitton as a strategic location along the Mobile River for military purposes and for trade with surrounding settlements. The first post office in Decatur was opened on July 10, 1848. In 1860, Decatur became the capital of Alabama after Montgomery was removed from the state to become an Confederate republic. When Union forces arrived during the Civil War in 1862 to besieged Montgomery and were about to march into town to take it over, General orders were given not to enter without battle and all officers who disobeyed were court-martialed and executed. Many residents chose to stay behind and fight against their own government rather than leave their homes which could have been captured or burned by Confederate troops. Fort Donelson (later renamed Fort Payne) was constructed on Mobile Bay near present day Decatur in order to protect what remained of Montgomery after its capture and destruction by Union forces on April 12, 1865; however only a small percentage ofDecatur's inhabitants actually joined in fighting (mainly because they had no choice). After the war ended, most ofDecatur's businesses closed down due to Reconstruction policies that favored white former Confederates over African Americans who had served in the Union army. However some people reopened businesses such as a jewelry store that reopened after Reconstruction period restrictions were lifted; this store would be closed again when civil rights laws began limitingacial discrimination throughout America beginning with passage of anti-lynching legislation called "the Ku Klux Klan Act" in 1938). In 1969, Decatur reverted back to its original name which it has held ever since: James H. Carman Townsite." Though many residents relocated away during Reconstruction period due to economic hardship brought about by Jim Crow laws implemented during this time period, many remain today as cultural icons associated with downtown Decatur - including author Harper Lee who grew up nearby and went onto write her Pulitzer Prize winning novel "To Kill A Mockingbird". Additionally much local history is available through local museums located throughout downtown areas such as Gaylord Opryland National Park adjacent courthouse square where more than $10 million has been raised for restoration projects between 1978-2005; also within walking distance are several excellent restaurants including Blue Bottle Coffee & Tea inside city hall complex ($4-$10), Alamo BBQ restaurant ($) off US 31 adjacent parking lot across from city hall complex ($10), Pappy's Place Barbecue ($) off US 231 next door Jones Bros gas station ($) good food at reasonable prices) Although much has changed since then outsideMuch like any major city there have been times when crime rates have spiked causing certain parts/areas around downtown areas such as riverfront area(such as Pappy's Place Barbecue) see below for current conditions? Old Downtown Decatur - currently under renovation! One of my favorite things about living here is feeling like I'm right smack dab in middle of everything happening politically etc... but without any formal history or landmarks going back more than 20 years or so...it feels prettyEmptyI used to love going out shopping center just east of here on Saturday mornings before work because you could find soooo much stuffgoodsforalmostnooneelsewas selling anywhere else! Nowadays most stores close early anyway so it's just a big open market lol
In 1821, Decatur was chartered as a town in Alabama. It was named for General James Wilkinson, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The city's first mayor was George C. Marshall. In 1914, the United States Marine Band moved to Decatur from Mobile, Ala., making it the first major city in Alabama to have its own Marine band.
